Surprised by Motherhood

She hops off the chair at dinner, captivated by the song that blares loudly from my favorite Pandora station.

Let Your Word move in power
Let what’s dead come to life
We are here for You
We are here for You

To You our hearts are open
Nothing here is hidden
You are our one desire
You alone are holy
Only You are worthy
God, let Your fire fall down.

It is beautiful, her unrestrained joy, the worship of her little 4 year old heart, belting out “we welcome You with praise, Almighty God of love, be welcome in this place,” and I can’t contain the tears spilling from my grateful heart.

And I’m reminded, it doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful, this thing called motherhood.

The floor is a sticky mess of orange juice droplets mixed with the yogurt tube the toddler squeezed onto the floor. The washing machine, an older model that I’m just happy is still cleaning clothes, knocks loudly in the middle of my 1950s designed kitchen. Dinner is tortellini from a package with jarred sauce on half price sale at Harris Teeter last week and a package of frozen broccoli. There’s clean laundry in a basket on the floor begging to be folded and dishes piled in the sink.

But instead of feeling overwhelmed, I choose instead to be grateful.

Grateful for the boy and the girl, the little lives growing in my house, under my roof, in my care. They’re little but are big blessings from God and He’s chosen me to be their mother. I don’t take the privilege or the responsibility lightly, and instead seek after God.

I’m learning not to try for perfection but instead I’m showing up, trusting Him, and expressing gratitude for the blessings, both big and small. For in reality, it’s He who is mighty and I’m resting in that today.

I’m working my way through Ann Voskamp’s book One Thousand Gifts and the theology of gratitude is rocking my world.

If you’ve ever struggled to find ways to teach your kids about Easter, this post is for you! I’ve compiled a list of things I’ve used with my kids along with other ideas I’ve found online for you to try.

While it can feel overwhelming to explain Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection to a child, these resources will give you lots of ideas that you can use or adjust based on the developmental needs of your child and their level of understanding.

It’s so important that we teach our kids the truth that Jesus died for us, rose again, and is now alive – even when they are small.

Teach a child how to follow the right way; even when he is old, he will stay on course.” Proverbs 22:6

Let’s be intentional about teaching our children deep spiritual truths on a level they can understand and share with their friends.

1. Resurrection Rolls

Type of Activity: Baking

Supplies Needed: crescent rolls, marshmallows, cinnamon & sugar (or red sprinkles), melted butter, Bible

Biblical Truth Shared: Jesus went into the tomb and then rose again. Jesus is alive!

For this activity, start with reading the Easter story from the Bible. Our favorite Bible for preschoolers is the Jesus Storybook Bible. As you work through the steps of the activity, remind your child about what you just read.
Spread out the crescent roll triangles individually on a baking sheet. These represent Jesus’ tomb.
Next roll one marshmallow first in butter and then in the sugar/cinnamon mixture. This represents Jesus’ body being prepared for burial with oil and spices. If your child is like mine (not okay with cinnamon), then try using red sprinkles to represent blood.
Place the spiced marshmallow in the center of the crescent roll, wrap it up, and press the edges together so the crescent roll seals. This represents the tomb being sealed with the stone.
Bake the crescent rolls according to the directions on the package.
After they cool a bit, let your child open up one of the rolls. The marshmallow is gone – Jesus is alive!

2. A Sense of the Resurrection: An Easter Experience for Families

In December on my husband’s blog I shared about Truth in the Tinsel, an incredible resource for teaching your children the Christmas story during the Advent season. It’s an e-book with scripture, crafts, and printable ornaments developed by Amanda White from ohAmanda.com.

She’s a former church planter and children’s ministry director and now a mom who has the spiritual gift of turning regular life things into teachable moments for her kids.

Here she shares about her newest resource parents can use to teach their children the Easter story:

3. Read a children’s book about Easter

Maybe you’re reading this and you don’t enjoy baking and aren’t the crafty type (no worries, there is nothing that says you have to be crafty to be a good mom!).

You can still impart Biblical truth to your children on their level by reading books that tell the Easter story through the perspective of a child and on their level. Here is my personal suggestion for toddler/preschool age plus some I’ve seen others recommend:

Ages 2-5: What is Easter? by Michelle Medlock Adams

This is a board book that keeps little ones engaged with rhyming words while exploring the idea that Easter is not just about Easter eggs, bunnies, and dressing up for church. Instead, it teaches that Easter is about the truth of God’s son, Jesus.

What Is Easter? book by Michelle Medlock Adams

Ages 4-7: The Berenstain Bears and the Easter Story by Mike Berenstain

The Bear cubs and Papa are candy-crazy this Easter! But Mama, with help from Papa, tells the cubs about Jesus’ resurrection and shows them that salvation is much sweeter than candy. Includes a colorful sticker set. {Amazon description}

Ages 7-12: The Story of Easter by Aileen Fisher

With an informative text and glorious illustrations, this book explains both how and why people all over the world celebrate Easter. It tells the biblical story of Jesus’ Resurrection and then describes how people honor this day and the origins of these traditions. Hands-on activities help draw children into the spirit of this joyous celebration of rebirth. {Amazon description}

4. Wash each others’ feet

Type of Activity: Hands-On Activity

Supplies Needed: warm water, a large bowl or basin, washcloths

Biblical Truth Shared: Jesus taught us to serve one another

Ages: 9-Teen

Read the story of Jesus washing the disciples’ feet in John 13:1-17.

Ask your children what they think that would be like to be the one washing another person’s feet or to be the one receiving the washing. Take them to another room where you have prepared warm basins of water and washcloths.

Play soft music in the background and encourage them to quietly take turns washing one another’s feet.

As a parent, you can participate in this process, potentially going first to visually show your children what to do and how it feels to be served in this way.

Afterwards, talk about how Jesus taught his disciples to serve one another before he was arrested and crucified and the powerful impact that made on them as they took on the job of spreading the gospel to the world.

Remind them that God calls us to serve just as Jesus did. Have them write down one way they can intentionally choose to serve someone else in the next week.

5. Resurrection Eggs

Type of Activity: Hands-On Activity

Supplies Needed: Set of Resurrection Eggs or make your own set

Biblical Truth Shared: Overview of the entire Easter story and the gospel message

Ages: 5 and up

Resurrection eggs are a visual way to walk your children through the Easter story. Each egg contains a small trinket that provides a reminder of a portion of the story. Use the pre-made resurrection eggs set or make your own using an egg carton, plastic eggs, and small items you can find around your house.

Number the eggs with a marker so they will be in the correct order when you’re ready to talk about the contents.

You can hide the eggs around your home for a mini Easter egg hunt, then have your child put them in the egg carton in number order.

Egg #1: Oyster cracker (or bread) – Matthew 26:26

Egg #2: Silver coins – Matthew 26:14-16

Egg #3: Purple cloth – Matthew 27:28

Egg #4: Thorns – Matthew 27:29

Egg #5: Rope – Mark 15:15

Egg #7: Nail – John 19:18

Egg #8: Sign that says, “This is the king of the Jews.” – Luke 23:38

Egg #9: Sponge (with vinegar) – Matthew 27:48

6. Read the Easter story in a Children’s Bible

Let’s not forget the most important part of Easter – reading the story straight from the Bible with your children. God’s word is our life, our breath, our food, our sustenance through the joys and challenges of our daily lives. We want to impress this upon our children as well and this is a great opportunity to do just that.

Type of Activity: Reading

Supplies Needed: Your favorite children’s Bible

Biblical Truth Shared: Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection

There are many different options for reading the Easter story from the Bible. Depending on the age and developmental stage of your child, you can choose from one of these options or read straight from an “adult” version of the Bible.

If your child is reading independently, you may want him or her to read the story directly from the Bible to the whole family during a meal time.

If you have Resurrection Rolls for breakfast Easter morning, this would be a great time to incorporate the reading.

Here is my personal suggestion for preschool/early elementary age plus another that comes highly recommended:

Ages: 4-8 The Jesus Storybook Bible – Also available in Spanish & on CDs (audio version)

What I love most about this Bible is how each story points directly to Jesus. While all biblical stories are not included, key ones like creation, the fall, Jesus’ birth, death, and resurrection are all part of this Bible.

All of the Old Testament Bible stories (Noah, Moses, King David, and more) point directly to Jesus, helping even young kids understand how Jesus is the central figure, the piece of the puzzle that makes everything in the Bible fit together.

Ages: 6-9 The Adventure Bible for Early Readers

This Bible is the New International Reader’s Version, a translation written for non-native English speakers. This makes it more accessible for your early reader.

This jungle safari themed Bible has lots of fun features including sections like “Life in Bible Times”, “Did You Know?” fun facts, “Let’s Live It” hands-on-activities, and “Words to Treasure” memory verses, along with games, a scavenger hunt, a dictionary/concordance, and 8 pages of color maps.

7. The Legend of the Sand Dollar

Type of Activity: Hands-On Activity

Supplies Needed: Sand Dollar Don’t live near the beach? You can purchase sand dollars here.

Biblical Truth Shared: God’s creation reminds us of the truths of the Easter story (Romans 1:20)

Have your child look at the sand dollar and all its unique properties. Ask him or her to describe what they see then read the Legend of the Sand Dollar poem.

Have your child break open the sand dollar to find the beautiful doves inside. My mother did this activity with my 4 year old last week and we both were fascinated and have a new appreciation for the reminder in Romans that God’s creation speaks clearly about his power!

There’s a lovely little legend

That I would like to tell,

Of the birth and death of Jesus

Found in this lowly shell.

If you examine closely

You’ll see that you find here,

Four nail holes and a fifth one

Made by a Roman’s spear.

On one side the Easter Lily,

Its center is the star,

That appeared unto the shepherds

And led them from afar.

The Christmas Poinsettia

Etched on the other side,

Reminds us of His birthday

Our happy Christmastide.

Now break the center open

And here you will release,

The five white doves awaiting

To spread Good Will and Peace.

This simple little symbol Christ left for you and me,

To help us spread His Gospel Through all Eternity

8. Easter Scavenger Hunt

Type of Activity: Hands-On Activity

Supplies Needed: a rock, two sticks, something black, something red, something white, something green

Biblical Truth Shared: The gospel message

Ages: 7-12

Take your kids to the park and read the Easter story (see suggestions above for options).

Give each child a list of items to find and a time limit. Once they come back with all the items, discuss the significance of each item as it relates to the good news of Jesus and God’s plan for his children. Sharing from Focus on the Family.

Digital version: Use a digital device and have each child take pictures of items they find. Then turn the pictures into a collage that you can print and display.

Rock – the tomb

Two sticks – the cross

Something black – sin

Something red – blood

Something white – a clean heart

Something green – growing in Christ

9. All Wrapped Up Like Jesus

Type of Activity: Hands-on experience

Supplies Needed: Bible, a roll of toilet paper

Biblical Truth Shared: Jesus conquered death

For: Ages 5-10

Read Matthew 27:57-61.

Take the toilet paper and wrap your child up in “grave clothes”. If you have more than one child, have your kids take turns playing the part of Jesus and wrapping one another up.

After each child is wrapped up, have them try to break loose from the toilet paper. Talk about how Jesus’ followers must have felt when they found out that Jesus was alive. Sharing from Focus on the Family.

10. Easter Jesus Tree & Devotional

Kids are familiar with the concept of having a tree at Christmas so why not carry that over into Easter?

Ann Voskamp from A Holy Experience and author of One Thousand Gifts shares a free devotional including 17 days of Bible readings, a short & simple action point, and a full color ornament of classic art to cut out and use to create your own Easter Jesus tree.

The Solution to the Ultimate Joy-Stealer

Last night marked a milestone in our family as we poured through mounds of paperwork at my daughter’s kindergarten registration night.

My Facebook status read, “How is it even possible that I will be attending kindergarten registration tonight? Someone please tell me where 5 years went…”

The time passed just like all time passes, second by second, moment by moment.

While the years seem to fly by, I’m trying desperately to remember to live in the moment. Lots of tiny glimpses of the daily happenings piled up in a heap turn into the days, weeks, months, and years of my life. And I try so desperately to make the little moments matter.

Some days, it’s beautiful. The moments look like building towers on the floor with the little ones, snuggling on the couch watching Elmo lullaby videos on You Tube, cutting strawberries and marveling at all the seeds, and reading books and books and more books before bed.

But other days it’s a struggle. The little moments of these days have snapshots like an entire box of Kix cereal spilled all over the living room floor, a feverish baby recovering from surgery fighting his dose of medication, crying to my husband because I don’t know how the budget is going to work this month, and falling asleep exhausted on the couch with my laptop (again) with too many to-do list items and not enough time or energy to complete them.

In reality, most days are made up of a crazy combination of ‘beautiful’ and ‘struggle’ moments.

Ok, let’s be really real. Sometimes it’s all a struggle and I worry and stress and fret and busy myself with tasks but forget to offer up all my cares and concerns up to the only One who has any power to change anything about anything. Yet in the middle of my mess, God meets me where I am as I seek Him daily.

Lately, my morning quiet time has been more focused on how much I can accomplish on my to do list instead of sitting and soaking up God’s presence in these precious quiet early moments of the day. When it happens, my Bible study has been reduced to browsing through one chapter of Proverbs a day and cracking open the daily devotional Jesus Calling. Slowly but surely, I’m also working my way through Ann Voskamp’s book One Thousand Gifts.

While it’s definitely leaps and bounds from where I’ve been in the past with my quiet time (non-existent for many years), the time is often not spent in the deep reflection and study that I know will grow my relationship with God in the way I desire.

Even though I’ve not been offering my whole self to my Creator, his grace is so evident to me as he meets me where I am in my weakness and fills me with His truth. He takes the small things I offer (think fishes and loaves) and turns it into provision for my life. This morning I have been filled again with his gracious and tender love, an example of how deeply He cares for me in the midst of my chaos, turning it right back into order – His order.

It’s Friday and today’s Five Minute Friday writing prompt from Lisa-Jo Baker is “joy”. I love the community of the #fmfparty women on Twitter each Thursday night and I stayed up late last night waiting for the prompt so I could join in with my words and share our hearts together through our writing. The prompt was posted around 11pm and instead of writing, I laid my head down to “rest” for a moment and woke up 30 minutes later to my husband walking in the door late from work. Foggy-headed and discouraged that I stayed up so late yet couldn’t manage to type out a few words for 5 minutes, I closed my laptop and crawled into bed.

This morning, after a long week of brain-draining training at work, a cranky toddler recovering from surgery, anxiety over finances, and the monthly hormonal swings that leave me snapping at my husband, I just wasn’t sure if there were any impactful words in my heart for me to share around the prompt of “joy”. Enter God’s grace and his provision (as always!). I opened up my journal to where I’ve been taking notes as I read through One Thousand Gifts and saw this quote:

Stress isn’t only a joy stealer. The way we respond to it can be sin.” And then more: “I can’t fill with joy until I learn to trust.”

Knowing this was God speaking truth into my life in the midst of my quite stressful week, I turned to my other morning staple, the Jesus Calling devotional, and read these words on the page for March 21:

Trust Me and don’t be afraid, for I am your Strength and Song…I want you to share My Joy, living in conscious awareness of My Presence.”

And there it was. My answer to the joy-struggle.

Trust.

Trust that God is working all things to the good as I seek Him daily. Trust that He will provide in the ways that our family needs it. Trust that this overwhelming season at work will resolve soon. I must practice trusting God. It is not enough just to believe He exists.

Remember, even the demons believe! But it’s my job to trust and then, only then, will my heart fill with joy as I am grateful for his love and provision in my life. Is it easy? Oh, surely not. Trust is a process and part of why I think we’re told in God’s word to “continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling.” The verse continues by reminding us, “for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” (Phillipians 2:12-13)

We offer up our lives as a living sacrifice, trusting him with each tiny choice we make instead of dwelling on the daily pressures and struggles.

Stress is a joy-stealer. Don’t let the constant dwelling on the worries of the world steal your joy like I’ve been letting it steal mine.

Instead, embrace the answer to this joy-struggle and trust God in the midst of the fears of the unknown.

Remember with me that trying to control all the variables of your life only leads to more fear and uncertainty. Instead, let’s focus on God’s truths and seek him as we trust him with our lives – not just once for our salvation, but daily, moment by moment.

Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the LORD, is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation.” With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. Isaiah 12:2-3

From Wallflower to Wildflower

I stand along the wall of the crowded room. The atmosphere is buzzing with excitement, yet I feel alone.

Yes, I’m an introvert, but this feels different. Surrounded by friends, yet somehow disconnected and distant.

The wall feels safe and comfortable. I sink into it and pretend it keeps me away from the small talk and everything else I’m afraid of but can’t process enough to fully understand yet.

Later I remember that God calls us to be wildflowers, not wallflowers. (Matthew 6:28)

“Do not worry,” he says. Live as a wildflower, beautiful and free of worries.

Oh, to embrace this. It’s a journey really. One of laying down my fears and anxieties and casting them onto him, just as he asks. It’s the daily work of faith, of releasing each thought, each action, each moment into his hands.

I am so thankful for the community God has created in this little corner of the online world. You all were faithful to pray for my little guy this week and he sailed through surgery like a champ. We still have a week or so of recovery to be out of the woods for complications, but he seems to have not gotten the memo that he had major surgery and is running around our house like a little wild man! Maybe it was all those steroids they pumped in him, but either way, he’s happy and not in pain thanks to our trusty rotation of Tylenol and Motrin. While I can’t say I didn’t experience any anxiety, I definitely felt your prayers and God’s comforting peace throughout. He even sent a nurse who is married to my dad’s first cousin (family!) to take care of us.

There is Power in Remembering

The fear grips me. You know the kind.

Chest tight, heart beating faster than a train barreling unrestrained down the tracks…and I wonder.

How does this turn out? How can this even be happening? How did we get to this place? Why me?

Sometimes it seems a struggle just to take the next breath, to accomplish the mundane things like brushing my teeth or combing my hair when there is so much pain and struggle in the storm that is now our life.

There was a time when I was in this place. And were you and I to sit together on a faded leather couch tucked in the back of an eclectic coffee shop with piping hot drinks in hand, maybe you’d share your story and it would be surprisingly a lot like mine.

Pain, struggle, heartache, and fear. And yet, God in the midst of it carried you and He carried me.

On Brokenness and Being Brave (And New Clothes!)

It isn’t easy.

This putting yourself out there for the world to see.

The sharing of the inner self with all of its brokenness and scars.

But there is something beautiful in being willing to be authentic and sharing life’s experiences. The ups and downs and around and arounds.

It is not easy. Life is not always pretty, wrapped up in shiny paper with a flowing bow to match. It’s real and raw and it spills out of us in words and thoughts all jumbled. But in transparency there is power.

I know because you’ve told me. You’ve shared how words shared are speaking to your life. And all because one person is willing.

What about you? Are you willing to step outside of your comfort zone, that place that feels safe but really isn’t? Are you willing to do something brave, something that might not work…but then again, it might?

Today let’s be brave and live as God created us – as artists! Our lives, placed in his hands. The Creator molding the created, transforming lives.

It’s March, that time of the year when nature can’t decide whether or not it’s winter or spring. It’s a time of transition and of promise of beautiful things to come. Here in my little corner of the online world, it’s also a time of transition.

In the next few weeks you will see changes to the look and feel as well as the name of the site. The content will be the same but the “clothes” will be different. I’m excited about what’s to come!

It’ll be a bit of a whirlwind few weeks, with my son having surgery on Tuesday, March 11th to remove his tonsils and adenoids to help his breathing and the warning from his doctor of two weeks of challenging recovery for the little guy.

Will you please pray for for my little man to recover quickly from the cold & cough he’s developed {he needs to be well or the surgery will be canceled}, for a rested and steady-handed doctor, and for Sekaiah to drink plenty of fluids so recovery is as smooth as possible?
