Be Still And Listen for the Whispers

September 5, 2014 By LeeAnn G. Taylor

At times it’s been through a whisper.

The Holy Spirit quietly prompting, reminding, rebuking, or refreshing my soul.

Growing up in a faith tradition where the concept of the Holy Spirit was often brushed past in Sunday School on even the best day, I’ve struggled as an adult to really listen to God’s voice in my life in the day-to-day.

Reading His word and gaining insight?

That’s where all those Sunday school lessons memorizing books of the Bible, learning how to use a Bible concordance, and studying for endless Bible Bowl questions comes in handy.

But listening, really listening for the voice of God in my life? Oh, that’s been a struggle.

Sometimes we need a reminder to be still and listen for God’s whispers in our lives.

And so I post this verse on my computer screen at work, in my car on a colored index card, on the mirror in the bathroom, and anywhere else I need a reminder.

Be still.

Know.

Remember His promises.

Remember I’m His child, his masterpiece.

Trust His provision for my life.

Trust His protection for my children.

Surrender control.

And listen for the whispers.

Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10

This post is part of Five Minute Friday {Whisper} where we’re given a writing prompt and encouraged to write for five minutes of free writing. It’s a beautiful community of women sharing their words and wisdom each week! Also sharing with Faith & Fellowship and Essential Fridays.

What about you? How do you listen for the Holy Spirit’s whispers in your life?

I run so fast ahead of Him at times that I miss the gentle whispers calling me back. “Be still and know”, yes, that is a lesson I am learning. Blessings!

Yes, sometimes it’s when I run with my ideas that I get ahead of myself. I forget to consult Him as my father and maker before running down a path that may not be the best one!

Love the verse! I almost used it too but chose Psalm 23 instead. God is so near that we probably are bumping into Him all day long and don’t even realize it. If we would just slow down we would be amazed at what He wants to tell us. Happy Friday!

Yes, today I thought about your words of “bumping into God” all day long today. What a fun way to think about Him being so near!

LeeAnn- Your beautifully crafted words speak much truth about how difficult it is to turn away from the noise of the world to listen to Him. And it’s a constant choice that does need index cards and reminders… anything to help fight the currant. Praise God that He is with us, even in the struggle to turn to Him and listen. Great post! Thanks for sharing your gift!

Oh Karen, thank you for your kind words. As a writer, sometimes I have no idea if my words make an impact. I just share what God is teaching me and hope it encourages others along the way. Thank you for confirming that to me today. Blessings for a wonderful weekend.

Hi Leeann – it was fun sharing in the fmfparty with you last night. Quieting my soul is a challenge for me but just what I need now. Maybe it’s why I love that verse so much. A reminder to still myself in Him.

      Debby,
It was great to meet you through the fmfparty last night too! Glad we’ll get to meet each other in person soon at Allume. I hope you have an incredible time at the Catalyst Conference and that God moves in mighty ways!

    LeeAnn:
I love your list of things you remind yourself of: it’s beautiful. Thank you for sharing your heart and your struggles!

Hi LeeAnn, I’m stopping by from FMF. I relate to your words. Being taught to read/memorize the Bible, the commands and promises. But being taught to stop and listen to the whispers of the Holy Spirit is something that was lacking for me, too. I’m striving to live aware with listening spiritual ears turned on. Thanks for sharing! Have a blessed weekend!

      Hi Kristen,
So glad you stopped by! As I raise my own children, the balance between teaching truth and teaching my children how to listen to God’s leading is a difficult one, but one I’m striving for. Blessings for a wonderful weekend for you as well!

I think we probably grew up in very similar faith traditions so I struggle with this too! Thanks for this beautiful reminder. 🙂 And thanks for linking up with the Faith and Fellowship blog hop! 🙂

      Hi Susannah,
I’d love to connect with you more about your faith background. My faith journey is one I never expected but I’m thrilled to be on this new journey of exploring Christ’s freedom!

A hearty Amen LeeAnn! Oh yes, this is what He has been telling me over and over and over again.
