Most people think of Amazon Prime as “free shipping.” That’s true, but it’s a small slice of what’s actually included. Below is a full breakdown by category, so you can see exactly what you’re paying for — and what you might be missing.

Shipping & Delivery

The original benefit, and still the most-used:

  • Free two-day shipping on millions of eligible items
  • Free one-day and same-day delivery in many metro areas, for orders placed before the daily cutoff
  • Discounted 1-hour and 2-hour delivery on groceries and everyday essentials from Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh

Prime members save an average of over $550 a year on delivery — nearly four times the annual membership cost. If you order more than a dozen times a year, shipping savings alone can cover the membership.

Streaming & Entertainment

  • Prime Video — thousands of movies and shows, including Amazon Originals. The standard plan now includes limited ads; an ad-free upgrade is available for a small monthly add-on.
  • Amazon Music (Prime tier) — over 100 million songs, ad-free, with unlimited skips. A paid upgrade unlocks full on-demand control and HD audio.
  • Prime Gaming — free PC games every month, in-game content, and a free monthly Twitch channel subscription.
  • Amazon Luna — cloud gaming access to a rotating selection of free titles.

Reading

  • Prime Reading — a rotating catalog of eBooks, audiobooks, comics, and manga at no extra cost
  • Amazon First Reads — one free Kindle book per month, often before it’s publicly released, plus a bonus short read
  • Amazon Original Stories — short reads from bestselling and new authors, free in eBook and audio
  • Audiobooks available through the free Kindle app and Audible’s free listening tier

Photos & Storage

  • Unlimited full-resolution photo storage, plus 5GB of video storage
  • Access and sharing across Fire TV, Echo Show, and Fire tablets
  • Even if you cancel Prime, you keep 5GB of combined storage for free

Health

  • One Medical membership for $9/month or $99/year — a $100 discount off the standard rate — for 24/7 virtual care access
  • RxPass, a $5/month add-on covering more than 60 common generic medications regardless of insurance
  • Prescription savings up to 80% at nearly 60,000 pharmacies when paying without insurance

Food & Groceries

  • Grubhub+ membership included at no extra cost
  • Discounted delivery windows from Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh
  • Exclusive in-store discounts for Prime members at Whole Foods

Deals & Shopping

  • Early access to Prime Day and Prime Big Deal Days, Amazon’s biggest sales events of the year
  • Ongoing Prime-exclusive deals across electronics, home goods, and fashion
  • 10¢-per-gallon fuel savings at participating bp, Amoco, and ampm stations

Discounted Memberships

Not everyone pays full price. Amazon offers reduced-rate Prime for a few groups:

  • Prime for Young Adults (ages 18-24): 6 months free, then roughly half the price of standard Prime until you turn 25 — plus 5% cash back on beauty, apparel, electronics, and more. If this is you, [here’s the full breakdown of the young adult offer →]
  • Prime Student: Similar discounted rate and extended free trial for verified students
  • EBT/government assistance recipients: Reduced monthly rate for qualifying households

Is Prime Worth It?

That depends entirely on which of the categories above you’d actually use. If you already spend on streaming, grocery delivery, or prescriptions separately, Prime often replaces several subscriptions at once for less than their combined cost. The best way to know is to try the free trial and track what you use over the first month.
