If you’re 18 to 24 and headed to campus this fall, there’s a version of Amazon Prime made specifically for you — and most students never hear about it until it’s too late to matter.
It’s called Prime for Young Adults, and here’s the short version: it’s free for 6 months, no strings attached, and after that it’s half the price of regular Prime for as long as you qualify. Not a one-time trial gimmick. A standing discount.
Let’s break down exactly what that means for your wallet this semester.
The Math: What “Free for 6 Months” Actually Covers
Six months of Prime lines up almost exactly with a fall semester. Sign up in August, and you’re covered through move-in, midterms, finals, and winter break — at $0.
Once the free period ends, Prime for Young Adults drops to about half the price of standard Prime, and it stays that way as long as you’re eligible. It’s not “free trial, then full price.” It’s free trial, then a permanent discount until you turn 25.
And the free trial itself isn’t just about skipping a subscription fee. Amazon Prime members save an average of over $550 a year on shipping alone — nearly four times what the membership normally costs. For a student ordering dorm supplies, textbooks, or care packages, that adds up fast.
What You Actually Get
- Free two-day (and often same-day) shipping on millions of items — useful when you forgot something and move-in is tomorrow
- 5% cash back on beauty, apparel, electronics, and more when you shop with Prime for Young Adults
- Prime Video and Prime Music for study breaks and background noise during long study sessions
- Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh delivery discounts, if your dorm or apartment doesn’t have a car nearby
- Unlimited photo storage, so your phone doesn’t fill up with move-in day photos
How to Sign Up
- Confirm you’re between 18 and 24
- Sign up for Prime for Young Adults through Amazon
- Enjoy 6 months completely free — cancel anytime before it ends if it’s not for you, no charge
- After 6 months, you’re automatically at the discounted young-adult rate, not the full price

Is There a Catch?
Not really. You can cancel before the 6 months are up and pay nothing. If you keep it, you’re paying roughly half of what everyone else pays, indefinitely. The only thing to watch is enabling a reminder near the end of month 6 so you’re not caught off guard if you decide it’s not worth it for you.
