A Place of Quiet Retreat

February 2, 2014 By LeeAnn G. Taylor

{Be sure to read all the way to the end of today’s post for a free e-book from Kat to jumpstart your morning quiet time!}

This past month has been a whirlwind of excitement as I have been sharing about moving from fear to faith to freedom in Christ and resources for purposeful Christian living. The positive feedback I’ve received has blessed my life in so many ways.

I love that when we seek to bless others, we often receive a blessing as well.

Those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed. Proverbs 11:25b

But some days are just a struggle. This week has had more of the struggle days than not.

We’ve spent the week snowed in with three out of four of the members of our family recovering from a ravaging stomach bug.

As a result, my morning quiet time routine and the daily rhythm have been…off…to say the least. I’ve struggled to hear from God in the mundane and in my sickness induced bedridden state. I wondered if I’d have anything at all to say on the blog this past week. I wondered why I’d felt so close to Him in the previous weeks and yet so distant now.

And then, the reminder I needed came with this scripture.

You're my place of quiet retreat. I wait for your word to renew me. Psalm 119:114

You’re my place of quiet retreat. I wait for your word to renew me. Psalm 119:114

That’s it! Of course!

My soul is only quiet when I’m in His word. And that means daily when possible.

Sometimes it’s not possible. Like {ahem} when you can’t get out of bed without a trip to the bathroom. And on those days he gives us grace.

But when it is possible, those sweet morning moments when the kids are still in bed {or snuggled next to you on the couch because your floor squeaks and it wakes them up!} when I’m able to steal away time for a quiet retreat, His word renews me.

Are you stealing away time in the mornings in a quiet retreat, waiting for His word to renew you?

If not, what’s stopping you?

You’re not a morning person? I wasn’t either!

You don’t have time? Just wake up 10 minutes earlier.

You need accountability? Join in with others seeking to make mornings a priority. Register for a HelloMornings accountability group on Twitter or Facebook. I’ve been with my same group for two years and it’s such a blessing to know there are people praying for me and looking for me each morning.

Need a jumpstart? Download the free Maximize Your Mornings e-book from Inspired to Action.

For me, making the commitment to a regular morning quiet time has been the best spiritual growth decision I have ever made. His word renews me daily and without it, I get into a f-u-n-k. But my morning quiet times are not perfect, nor do they need to be. It’s a daily decision to walk closer with Him.

Would you take a moment in the comments today to share some encouragement for someone just starting out on the morning quiet time journey?

Sharing today with Sunday Stillness, The Sunday Community, The Weekend Brew, Spiritual Sundays and Still Saturday.

Thank you so much for sharing this! It’s exactly what I needed today. As a new mother it’s hard, I have been looking for accountability and an easy way to connect with others who are in the word. I signed up for hellomornings 🙂

So glad! Do you use Twitter or just Facebook? Once the Hello Mornings next session opens up for group sign-ups on Feb 17th, they will have the option of checking in with a group either on Twitter or FB depending on your preference. I am part of a Twitter group because I would get sucked in by FB and never do my Bible study!

I’m reading through the Bible this year and establishing the morning routine of being in His Word is truly a blessing. I pray you and your family all feel better soon.

Thank you! My husband got the bug tonight, but it seems to be a short lived one so we’re hoping it passes quickly.

I could not agree more! I am NOT a morning person, so I joined a Good Morning Girls bible study group last year but foun even that wasn’t holding me accountable…so I signed up last Fall to LEAD a Good Morning Girls online group and that is what did it for me…knowing I have almost 30 women counting on me has given me accountability and motivation and inspiration to have daily quiet time and dig deeper into God’s Word. Since the Fall, my life has transformed in so many ways and I KNOW it is a result of my growing closer and leaning into God through His Word, and allowing Him time to speak into me. By starting my day out focusing on Him first, it sets a tone that positions me well for handling whatever comes my way.

Point being…do whatever it takes to make time to be still with The Lord. It is medicine for your soul, yes?

Accountability really does make all the difference! I never got serious about making morning quiet time a habit until I knew there would be others missing me if I didn’t. God really did create us to be in community.

Hi Leeann, what a beautiful blog. I can hear your voice through the screen… and I can sense your heart for God and for us. Love this post… you’re speaking my language, friend #soulrest. 😉 Hope you get better this week… and get refilled on your soul-time later this week. Hang in there. We have the sun here in CA — and with Caleb sick, it’s still just as soul-draining. 😉

I hope you are feeling better!

Great reminders in this post. Oh, how I need my quiet time with the Lord. Thanks for the link to Kat’s e-books.
